Setting (acheivable) Goals: My New Years Resolutions
Coming up with resolutions this year was actually a lot harder than I anticipated. I had pages of things I wanted to work on, and nowhere to really start. I eventually decided to break things down and prioritize them into manageable chunks, make lots of lists in the process, and format the goals in a way that my brain could understand.
I started with a list of what I needed to be my best self (movement, sunshine, people, etc)
Then an list of things I wanted to do and work on. The list was long and overwhelming, but it gave me a place to start. I just wrote EVERYTHING down and got it out of my system.
Then a list of what was stopping me from doing any of those things, so that I would know what hurdles my goals needed to be formatted around.
Then a list of what I was seeking in my life- this was a list of deeper meaning things that I wanted in my life, that umbrella-ed over the WHY I even wanted to change anything.
Then lastly I reviewed all of those lists and broke it down into what I felt like I could do- goals that were manageable and I could work into my life. I also want to note that I gave myself two mindsets. 1. I'm not starting everything all at once. I can work on one at a time until I have it mastered and then move on. 2. I just want to improve from day to day and never quit. Even if one goal falls apart one day, at least the next day I can try again. Don't wait weeks or longer to try and get back on track. Kust stand up and keep walking.
Here is what I finalized for my goals this year:
-20-30 mins of walking or activity per day
-3 push-ups, squats, and jumping jacks everyday. increasing incrementally as capable. (I literally do this right before I hop in the shower, because that's the time I have the thought and desire).
-Take personal time during one of Owen's naps
-Invite at least one person over each week
-Have FHE and a Family council every week (This weekly planning includes meals for the week)
-Set an alarm in the morning and wake up before Owen to make time for scripture study
-Budget once/week
-Date night once/week
-Keep my tumbler full of ice water and drink more!
-Keep a gratitude journal
-10 min. tidy before bed
the goals below are sort an outline as to how I am accomplishing the list of goals above.
More:
hand lettering
blogging
make out sessions
Podcasts
Water
Less:
Wasting time (scrolling)
whining
clutter
money spent
lazy
Replace:
soda:water
nap:exercise
scrolling:lettering/blogging
lounging:cleaning
---
I know that all of that might seem overwhelming, but trust me it's a lot more manageable than what I had initially. And one of the best parts is that I'm comfortable with not doing everything right now! I'm extra focusing on scrolling less, having an 10 minute tidy, and being active during the day. But the gratitude journal and drinking more water are taking a back seat for a few more weeks (at least) until I have a few other things accomplished and can add more to my plate.
It all came down to my motivation and desire. I had to want to make the changes and see the results before the action could even take place.
