Force it till You Feel It
When I was little, I was scared to jump off the diving board. I don't know what exactly it was that scared me, if it was looking foolish, or belly flopping, or the falling sensation, or not being sure if I could swim to the side afterwards... I'm not sure. But I was adamant about not wanting to jump off.
Then one weekend I was spending the night at my Grandma's, and I remember being like, "I want to jump off the diving board. I'm going to do that." I don't know what triggered it, I have no idea what gave me the desire or chased away the fear. There wasn't a special pep-talk from anyone, or treat bribery, or anything. Just suddenly a switch flipped inside me that decided I was ready.
And the next time we went swimming, I did.
I follow @thejulietaylor on Instagram, and the 'force it till you feel it' mantra is one I learned from her. It's different from fake it till you make it. Faking it feels so.... blah. So hopeless. But forcing it, though it doesn't sound fun, at least sounds productive. It gives a light at the end of the tunnel, because then not only do you make it, but you believe in it!
This pattern of not wanting to do something, and then one day just feeling like I want to, is one that I see a lot in my life. Maybe the stubborn toddler in me just never disappeared completely (remind me to tell you the pea bucket story sometime), but I don't believe that I am the only one that maybe knows you should do something, but just doesn't have the desire.
But forcing it until you feel it means that even when you don't want to... you do. I believe in reflecting, and pondering, and moving forward despite hardships and setbacks. And I believe that when you do, it will come. The desire to DO will come. Just be patient enough for the timing to be right and the pieces to fall into place.
And I'm not only talking in relation to something as simple as jumping off of a diving board, but much more complicated things as well. Creating a budget and sticking to it, going on a diet, asking for forgiveness, deciding a career, finding a hobby, choosing when to start a family, etc. etc. Way important decisions need to be made all of the time for us to move up in life, and they. are. not. easy. #adulting
It all comes down to motivation. If you are doing something because someone else says you should, then you wont love it and you wont be successful. But if you do something because you want to, then you will enjoy it SO much more and the end result will be fantastic. Don't sit still waiting for the desire to come, but keep working until it shows up. And it will!
Now go jump off that diving board!
